The Report July and August 2008 |
|
Dear Brothers, Linda and I are back from Oquawka and I mowed the grass here; it was tall. While I’ll send more later, here are things that may be of interest:
Oquawka now has 911 services and our official address is We still have the canoe and 4 horse motor with tank (John), the 12 foot aluminum boat and trailer with beer can collection (Bill) and the lion-needlepoint footstool (Michelle). Linda brought home two quilts and a yankee screwdriver. I have the large petrified wood, a small table and Dad’s old wooden tripod. With the exception of renters stuff, overhead lumber and boats, all buildings except the garage by the house are empty. I didn’t toss tools or boats. We still have the kayak, sailfish and 50 horse Alumacraft. Unfortunately, there are no double-hose tanks for the 50 horse. We had three at one time, I suspect they were stolen. My friend who owns a marina here in Punta Gorda tells me they became hard to find and very expensive when OMC switched to the single hose tank. Mike Dooley took the Imperial – does anyone know where to find the keys? Lonnie will sell the Toyota pickup. Tom managed to sell some items on Cragslist.org and hauled home a van-load of stuff for eBay. We ordered a 20 yard dumpster and filled it past the brim. Nancy Reed built bonfires and kept them burning for days. Five truckloads went to the auction house in Monmouth, including Craftsman power tools, but don’t expect to get rich as they take a 30% commission. A metal recycler hauled off a good portion of scrap. The little barn has a new hasp and I rebuilt the brick steps to the laundry room. Tom, I did manage to close the screen door leading to the wood pile. The dresser by the cabin door contains tools, string, stuff and flags while the one by the dining table has keys and family papers. All others are empty. Please let me know if you are wondering about the disposition of a specific item, I may remember if you don’t wait long. We took in $445.00 in cash and I spent $288.30 on cleaning supplies, rat poison, insecticide and stuff. I sent a check to Lisa for the balance. Mom’s $300.00 Economic Stimulus check came in and I deposited it in the Land Trust account. We may owe around $700.00 for Medicare premiums, but will deal with that when and if the bill comes in. Remind me to cancel the deposit box at Wells Fargo we closed last November as I just received a bill. We had a costly setback when a windstorm took out trees and Jim Belzer’s electrical service. Fortunately there was no building damage, but we did help Nancy and Steve pull a tree off the roof of Mildred’s house. It would be nice to trim trees and improve the view of the river. The gutter needs to be cleaned. The crawlspace above the hallway needs new insulation. The paperwork in the Clendenin Archives needs a curator. Remaining items I didn’t have the heart to dispose, or time to consider, are in the garage by the house awaiting the next brother’s visit. When you do visit, go home with everything you brought and remember to take something, even if it’s only a seashell, book or blanket.
Love, |
